02/13 blog reflection

All three of the readings showed both sides of how important or “unimportant” for a personal relevant, retaining, and engaging education for students everywhere. In Ladson-Billings, “But That’s Just Good Teaching! The Case of Culturally Relevant Pedagogy”, she led a study where she examined how prepared or strong teachers acted in their classroom. Throughout her studies, she found that the most prepared teachers were the ones who included the culturally relevant pedagogy into schooling. This allowed for personal and genuine relationships with their students, and pressed for critical thinking for the students and their communities. A perfect quote that explains Ladson-Billings studies states, “ … the issue lies in the attempt of inserting culture into education, rather than inserting education into culture” (1995). In the chapters about Critical Race Theory, by authors Delgado and Stefaneie, they introduce the structure of critical race theory; which is a collection of scholars and extreme activists that study and transform relationships within power, race and racism. The Decisions that Matter, an interactive comic experience, offered a user narrated game play which allowed the player to be in control and decide  which direction the story would go.

The interactive game was so interactive, intense and intriguing! Realistic as well. Rape culture is infortunately extremely real. Being a transfer student who is 27 years old, I can say that I understand and have become educated on rape and its culture. From family members, to friends, to meetups on campus that bring awareness, and just being older in general, I can definitely say I am aware and knowledgeable on this topic. So for me, playing this game was an eye opener because it truly had an effect on me because it was so realistic.

How educated are YOU on rape culture?

  1. Hello Natalie,
Regarding on rape culture, I do not think that I know a lot about it. The reason is because I have never thought about how it may have affected us in any way. But I would assume that since it is becoming a norm many people in the society start to view it as if it is the other person’s fault.
