In Mirra, Morrell and Filipiak’s piece, the main argument consists of the theories of digital media through education and how to move beyond the bias that most media is seen as something wary and distrustful; media is not used enough throughout school’s as it should be. Media has so much potential to help children learn and become more for the future; to become creative inventors. In Gerbner’s piece, we visit the importance of story telling with the main argument being, “how do we know what we know?” and what makes what we know important and how? How has the feeder of information changed throughout the years. In Halverson’s TED Talk, she discusses art and it’s various forms. The argument here is giving these children the ability to express themselves in these various art forms but making sure they have the tools to do so through education; embracing creativity.

These pieces couldn’t help but compel me to want to do more for our youth; a big reason why I am choosing to become an educator in the near future to children in K-5. Growing up, I was never encouraged to be creative in school. Most of my K-12 experiences did not include digital media, nor did it include creative expression through forms of song, dance, poetry or story telling. It was actually more frowned upon more than anything. If it was not in basic sentence or essay format, my teachers did not want any part of it. I feel as if my experience were different, I would have benefited more as an intellectual. Things need to change for our youth and I cannot wait to be apart of it.

What can we do to make sure creative expression and digital media become something that is encouraged in the classroom? How can we help make a change?
